The Best Games for Every Month of the Year

Playing games together is one of our favorite activities. We can often be found challenging one another to a round of our favorite games or giggling together as we dig into a new board game. There are just so many great games to enjoy!

Iโ€™m always searching for new ones to add to our rotation for family game night, gameschooling unit studies, keeping busy on road trips, or adding fun to a rainy day. How do I keep our game stash fresh and interesting? I rotate through them by choosing games that line up with the topics weโ€™re learning about and seasonal games.

If youโ€™re interested in adding more games to your homeschool lesson plans or family time, donโ€™t miss our Guide to Gameschooling. Itโ€™s filled with creative ideas for squeezing more games into busy days, tips to help you get started, and the best games for every age and academic subject.

You can often find great games on the clearance rack, at the thrift store, and even at yard sales. Some libraries rent out games too, so you can always play something new together without spending lots of money on new games. With that in mind, Iโ€™ve compiled a brand-new game list for October, allowing you to shop and plan your game rotation with ease.

Whether youโ€™re looking for seasonal favorites or new games to enjoy throughout the year, youโ€™ll love this list. Thereโ€™s something for everyone, from preschoolers to parents.

October Game Suggestions for Kids of All Ages

There are so many exciting October game suggestions for kids of all ages that it was hard to choose only a few. Still, we have narrowed down the list to our favorite spooky games this month, with fun for everyone from preschool to high school.

13 Dead End Drive

13 Dead End Drive from Winning Moves is a blast for October gameschooling! This spin on the classic Clue game is filled with suspense, strategy, and 3D elements. Kids ages 8 and up can practice their problem-solving skills as they work to confirm their suspicions in this board game.

Attic Monster

Another 3D board game we love is The Attic Monster from Roast & Toast Games. This cooperative game has players working together to chase away friendly ghosts and uncover the secrets inside the haunted mansion and surrounding โ€œgarden.โ€ Itโ€™s so easy that kindergartners can play and still fun for older kids too.

Cauldron Quest

Cooperative games are especially fun for young learners, and theyโ€™re filled with opportunities to practice teamwork and communication. Check out Cauldron Quest from Peaceable Kingdom this October to make your own potions and spells together in time for Halloween with just 20 minutes of gameplay with kids as young as six.

Ghost Fighting Treasure Hunters

Ghost Fighting Treasure Hunters from Mattel is another cooperative game on our list this month. Cooperative games just seem fitting when youโ€™re battling ghosts and monsters, right? In this spooky board game, kids ages 8 and up will work together to beat the ghosts.

Want more competition? This game has a โ€œhead haunter modeโ€ where one player gets to control the ghosts and defend against the other players. Up to 5 players can get in on the fun in this ghostly game.

Haunted Mansion

Are you a Disney fan? Then youโ€™ll love the Funko Disney Haunted Mansion board game! Itโ€™s filled with all your favorite characters. Plus, you can grab the Disney World or Disneyland edition to match the park of your choice.

Kids will love the rotating board and glow-in-the-dark hitchhiking ghost pawns in this board game featuring 99 character cards and a ghost bidding system. Itโ€™s the perfect Halloween game night choice for up to 6 players.

Horrified Games

There are so many games in the Horrified Games series from Ravensburger that you could play a different one every week this month! This set of board games features uniquely themed character pawns and boards. Thereโ€™s a Universal Monsters theme, a Greek Monsters theme, an American Monsters theme, and a World of Monsters board.

Every game invites adults and kids ages 10 and up to test their critical thinking skills and their courage as they navigate between worlds and survive catastrophes. If you have more than one version, you can combine them to create a unique gameplay experience.

Monster Fluxx

Weโ€™re big fans of the Fluxx card game from Looney Labs. The Monster Fluxx version features rules that change at every turn and goofy monsters to keep your kids on their toes. Itโ€™s great for encouraging flexible thinking, resilience, and strategy this month with kids as young as age 8.

Mysterium

Mysterium from Asmodee is another spooky cooperative game where one player gets to be the ghost, giving wordless clues via mysterious cards while the other players work together to solve the โ€œhaunting.โ€

This flexible game can be played with just 2 players or as many as 7, making it a win for small families and large ones. Kids ages 10 and up can practice teamwork, imagination, and problem-solving. Parents will love the artwork and mystery behind this beautiful October game.

Mystic Manor

October is the perfect time to add Mystic Manor to your game rotation. Itโ€™s a competitive strategic ghost hunting game thatโ€™s different every time you play. Kids ages 10 and up can discover what’s hidden in each space of the house.

Then, stamp spaces as you clear them with the included rubber stamp and ink pad. Each player has unique abilities that will lead the game in different directions.

Youโ€™ll have fun testing out all the characters and deciding how to win with each one. If you can only get one game this October, this one from Last Night Games is a perfect choice.

Pumpkin Showdown

One of our favorites is the Boo Hollow Pumpkin Showdown game from Funko. Itโ€™s a not-so-spooky themed card game thatโ€™s quick to learn and fun for all ages.

Youโ€™ll have fun โ€œthrowing pumpkinsโ€ and getting other players out round after round on family game night with this adorable game. Plus, itโ€™s budget-friendly and small enough to fit in your purse for on-the-go gaming.

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza (Halloween Edition)

This fast-paced card game is one of our favorites! Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is silly and spooky with a Halloween theme for October. In this game, players slap down cards as quickly as possible for a fine motor skills boost that tests their reflexes and powers of observation.

Kids of all ages will love how this new edition from Dolphin Hat Games dresses their favorite character cards up in silly Halloween costumes. Youโ€™ll love all the laughter and smiles that follow playing this cozy game together.

Toil & Troublez

Toil & Troublez from Grandpa Beckโ€™s Games is ideal for Halloween gameschooling or a Shakespearean unit study. Players cast spells and race to win while practicing memory skills in this game for kids ages 6 and up. Youโ€™ll love the magical twists in this card game for everyone.

Zombie Dice

Another October game we love is Zombie Dice from Steve Jackson Games. Dice games are Kevinโ€™s favorite, and this one adds a fun Halloween theme thatโ€™s scary, but not too scary.

Kids ages 10 and up can play this game in just fifteen minutes, making it a good quick-play game for homeschoolers to enjoy this fall.

Zombie Kittens

If you love Exploding Kittens, you should definitely check out Zombie Kittens this month. Youโ€™ll love the hilarious cartoon images featured on every card, and we promise gameplay is filled with lots of giggles and strategy for up to 5 players as young as age six.

Extra Spooky Teen Games for October

If youโ€™re gameschooling with teens and adults, you might want to add a bit more fright to game night. For extra spooky games, check out our favorites for ages 13 and up listed below.

Clue Conspiracy

Fans of Clue from Hasbro will enjoy Clue Conspiracy. This more mature version is for ages 14 and up, with gameplay lasting 45 minutes to an hour.  This secret role-playing strategy game gives you the ability to lie to other players as you try to get away with murder.

The board game also got a makeover for this new version with an island resort setting, a new victim, new traps, and more colorful characters to explore. Youโ€™ll need to lie, bluff, and sneak around to solve the mystery.

Mansions of Madness

With four different versions, there are plenty of ways to have fun with the Mansions of Madness board game from Fantasy Flight Games. Start with the base game, then add the expansion packs for extra fun all month long with teens ages 14 and up.

Gameplay lasts 2 to 3 hours, so itโ€™s perfect for a gaming marathon on Halloween night. The best part is that this terrifying board game can be played solo or cooperatively with up to 5 people.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf

If your family loves fast-paced party games, One Night Ultimate Werewolf is a must for October game night. In this social deduction game, each player takes on a hidden roleโ€”villager, seer, troublemaker, or even a werewolf. The catch? You only have one round (about 10 minutes) to figure out whoโ€™s who before the village votes.

Itโ€™s perfect for teens and adults who enjoy bluffing, quick thinking, and a little mischief. Younger players can join in too with some guidance, making it a great choice for mixed-age groups at a Halloween gathering. With no player elimination and rounds that fly by, itโ€™s easy to play again and again, keeping the fun (and suspense) going all evening.

Werewolf

Werewolf is a classic mystery party game. You can grab the cards from Stellar Factory and enjoy them at an upcoming Halloween party or for some family game night fun. This game works well with groups, but you could adapt it for play with smaller parties as well.
