This Survival Unit Study Is Perfect For Summer Homeschooling
Emily has had a major interest in Bear Grylls and survival ever since the interactive Man vs. Wild show premiered. So, of course I immediately began brainstorming ways to incorporate this new found interest of hers into our homeschool and decided a Survival Unit Study would be perfect!
Why We Love Learning About Survival
Emily loves learning about survival because it is fun, interesting, and a brand new concept to her. She thinks the idea of eating bugs to survive is both gross and cool at the same time. And she finds Bear Grylls and the things he does intriguing.
I love incoporating survival into our homeschool because I know that not only am I teaching my daughter academic lessons I am also teaching her valuable life lessons. Life lesson that may one day even save her life!
I mean if we’re being honest I could use some survival skills too. So I am excited to learn more about things like first aid, building a fire, shelters, edible plants and more!
How This Survival Unit Study Works In Your Homeschool
In our homeschool, we predominantly use unit studies. I believe unit studies offer a unique opportunity to instill a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Unit studies focus on topics/themes Emily is truly interested in such as survival and Bear Grylls. This means she is more likely to remember the things she learns.
It’s also a great way to encourage her to deep dive into subjects she wants to learn about. By using unit studies, we can focus on the things she really wants to learn. It’s a great way for our entire family to connect and enjoy a topic together.
In this survival unit study, we will accompany famous survivalist Bear Grylls on 12 different adventures all over the world. From the jungle to the desert, we will learn all kinds of important survival skills to help us survive in different environments and situations.
Bear Grylls Adventure Books
These books serve as the spine for our survival unit study. If your kids are fascinated by Bear Grylls or his TV shows, his children’s adventure series is a lot of fun to explore! I built this survival unit study around his books. His books are fun adventure tales for kids that explore various wilderness situations like blizzards, caves, and volcanoes.
Bear Grylls Biography
Learn all about Bear Grylls himself. It’s a great opportunity for kids who dream of being a survivalist to learn more about the expert. I’ve added discussion questions which we use to check for reading comprehension and dig deeper into the topic together. Plus, there’s a QR code that leads to a biography video for even more learning fun and a Biography Worksheet for handwriting practice and reading comprehension.
Coloring Pages
I love including coloring pages in our unit studies too. Coloring is fun and relaxing. Plus, it’s a great way to keep little hands busy while you read. Kids can color related pages while you read aloud from the adventure books or biography page.
Survival Challenges
Each survival challenge includes videos, reading assignments, and activities to explore a variety of survival skills and topics with your kids throughout this unit study. From youtube playlists to games to hands-on activities your kids will be learning survival skills and exploring geography along the way with Bear Grylls. It’s the perfect interest-led unit study for any survivalist.
