Fitness For The Whole Family
Practicing healthy fitness is important for the whole family. This year, we have committed to having more fun together as a family as we pursue our fitness goals together. We’ve made it a goal to participate in a 5k race/walk every month this year.
Training together, walking together, and completing these 5ks have been so amazing for our family! We love spending this time together moving our bodies.
For moms, fitness can be an important form of self-care. I know self-care is a term we tend to overuse, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need to practice it in our own lives. When we make the time and space to care for ourselves, we become healthier and better versions of ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally.
If you’ve been putting everyone else first for some time now, I want to encourage you to step back and get serious about taking care of yourself. Adding fitness activities to your schedule is an important form of self-care that’s not just for your physical body. Exercise is great for our mental health too!
Engaging in these kinds of healthy activities has a positive effect on our families too. When we choose fitness for ourselves, we’re showing our kids that it’s important and valuable. Then, we can add family activities for fitness to make it fun for everyone.
Family Activities For Fitness And Fun
There are so many easy and fun ways to get your whole family involved in fitness! Indoor and outdoor family activities make it easy to build connections, learn together, and practice fitness as a family. Check out some of our favorite family activities for fitness and fun below.
Hiking & Nature Walks
One of our family’s favorite ways to engage in healthy physical activity is by getting outside. Each day we take a walk together as a family. There are lots of easy ways to implement this healthy activity with your own family.
Start with a family walk in the morning or after dinner, whenever it makes the most sense for your family’s schedule. A short walk around the neighborhood or through the woods is a great way to begin Nature Walks in your homeschool too.
Hiking is another family favorite for us. We love exploring the US National Parks and learning as we hike the trails. Check out my Travelling the Parks curriculum for ideas on how to add homeschool lessons and activities to your family’s fitness fun in the parks.
Canoeing & Kayaking
Getting out on the water is fun and engaging for the whole family! You can often rent canoes or kayaks at local parks to explore the waterways in your community.
Paddling is a great exercise for your arms! It’s also a fun way to help your homeschoolers build hand-eye coordination and practice crossing the midline.
Ziplining
Ziplining is such a memorable experience and it’s a great way to practice fitness with your kids as well. It’s a chance to unplug and try something new. Plus, it’s perfect for the adrenaline junkies in your family.
Trampoline Parks
There are all kinds of family activities for fitness and fun that you can do indoors as well. Trampoline parks are a lot of fun for the whole family and quite a workout too! They’re a perfect excursion for days when the weather keeps you indoors.
Bowling
Many bowling alleys offer special discounts for homeschool families and family bowling passes you can use to get everyone in on the fun. Bowling is a great way to get everyone up and moving, practice fitness, and have fun together. We have fun adding friendly bets to our bowling games too.
Miniature Golf
Miniature golf is another fun outdoor activity for the whole family that’s filled with fitness opportunities. Plus, homeschoolers can practice their math skills by keeping the scorecard as they play. There are indoor and outdoor miniature golf courses, so it’s a great activity for all kinds of weather.
Backyard Games
You don’t have to leave your home to play fitness games together. There are all kinds of fun games you can play in your own backyard! Our family favorite is corn hole. A backyard soccer, badminton, or volleyball game would be a lot of fun too.
The Floor is Lava
Another fun way to engage in healthy physical activity indoors is to play games that get everyone up and moving around in your own home. The Floor is Lava is one we have a lot of fun with at our house. The Floor Is Lava Family Edition from Goliath Games can help you get started with this exciting game.
Pokemon Go
Sometimes adding technology to the mix is the way to go when it comes to encouraging family fitness. Fit Bits and other fitness trackers can be used to encourage a little healthy competition in your family or with yourself.
Games that encourage physical activity like Pokemon GO or Nintendo Wii games are also a great way to get your whole family engaged in physical fitness in a way that’s fun for everyone.
