Make Memories with Movies This June

June always feels like the true start of summer. May is all about wrapping up the year, recitals, graduations, and celebrations. Then, we find ourselves looking for ways to slow down and soak up the season in June. This month is filled with possibilities!

That’s why movies are the perfect way to make memories. They invite curiosity, spark big conversations, encourage imagination, teach life lessons, and foster connection. A great June film can feel like a summer adventure in a way that worksheets just can’t.

Juneteenth on June 19th is a powerful place to start. Films rooted in freedom, courage, and history give kids a window into stories that shaped this country and open conversations worth having all summer long. It’s also a good way to begin talking about Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.

Father’s Day is another natural anchor for movie night. Films about dads, mentors, and the bonds between fathers and kids can make the day feel special without glue sticks and construction paper crafts. Foster connection by letting Dad choose the film. Just grab some snacks, pile on the couch, and let the story do the work.

Then there’s the magic of the summer solstice. It’s the longest day of the year and the official kickoff for summer. A movie night under the stars is the perfect way to mark it. Films also bring opportunities to teach kids about nature, wonder, and the great outdoors this June while celebrating  National Camping Month and National Pollinator Week.

A nature documentary before a camping trip or a film about the wild world of bees can turn screen time into a launching pad for real exploration. June has its very own vibe. Let’s match it!

Learning Through Movies Works

Learning through movies works! It’s especially effective in months like June when we feel the need to slow down, be more intentional, and step away from traditional lesson plans and workbooks. Get Kids Talking

Movies get us talking, and that’s an incredible place to begin learning together as a family. These films naturally start conversations without reading comprehension questions or essay questions. You might be surprised by where the conversation goes once you get started!

Just One Thing

Resist the urge to turn a great movie into a full-blown unit study. I know it’s tempting, but sometimes it’s best to add just one thing. Start with something small, like a themed snack or drawing your favorite scenes. Then, see where it leads.

Try a Movie Month

Start with just one of these June movies to watch in your homeschool. If it’s a success, try a movie month. There are lots of engaging holidays and observances to fill up the entire month.
